Live Medaka Shipped to South Dakota
Yes, I ship live Japanese rice fish to South Dakota. Boxes leave Raleigh, North Carolina on Mondays by UPS 2nd Day Air, so a Monday box is normally due Wednesday. I have no shop or pickup in South Dakota.
South Dakota weather and your fish
South Dakota has hard winters and strong wind across open ground, then hot summers. A patio tub is a warm-season home here, and an indoor tank is the simple winter answer.
Sioux Falls on the eastern side is more humid, while Rapid City and the Black Hills are drier with sharper swings. Windbreaks help a lot, and a shed or garage is not a safe winter spot unless it stays above freezing and the water is deep.
When to order
Late spring through early fall is usually easiest. I hold boxes when a hard freeze is forecast.
Keeping medaka here
Roughly USDA hardiness zones 3 to 5. Outdoors, go large and deep, stop feeding below about 50°F, and never smash ice. A 10-gallon or larger indoor tank needs no heater. More in my winter guide.

Common questions
Can you ship live medaka to South Dakota?

Can medaka live outside all year in South Dakota?
Sometimes, in a large, deep container. Colder areas are safer with an indoor winter home.
