Breeding Supplies
Handmade spawning mops for breeding medaka, killifish, and other egg-laying fish, the exact ones I use in my own program.
Handmade spawning mops for medaka, killifish & more
A spawning mop is the single most useful tool for breeding egg-laying fish. Females wipe or scatter their eggs onto fine, soft material near the surface, and a dense yarn mop reads as the perfect spot, so eggs collect in one place you can simply lift out, instead of being scattered across the tank and eaten by the adults.
Which fish use a spawning mop?
Mops are a staple for medaka (Japanese rice fish) and killifish breeders, and they work just as well for goldfish, koi, White Cloud Mountain minnows, danios, tetras, barbs, and rainbowfish, really any egg-scattering or plant-spawning species. If your fish lay adhesive eggs on plants, a spawning mop will collect them.
Made and tested in my own breeding program
I hand-make every mop from soft, fish-safe acrylic yarn, conditioned and rinsed so it's ready to use. These aren't a resold accessory, they're the same mops working in my outdoor breeding tubs right now. Drop one in a tub of conditioned breeders and you'll have eggs to collect within days during the warm season.
How to use one
Float or weight the mop, pull it every day or two, and move the eggs to a separate container to hatch away from hungry adults. My step-by-step medaka breeding guide covers conditioning, egg collection, and raising fry. See my shipping details for how supplies ship.
