Live Medaka Shipped to Kentucky

Written by Chris, the breeder at Firefly Medaka in Raleigh, NC

Yes, I ship live Japanese rice fish to Kentucky. Boxes leave Raleigh, North Carolina on Mondays by UPS 2nd Day Air, so a Monday box is normally due Wednesday. I have no shop or pickup in Kentucky.

Kentucky weather and your fish

Kentucky sits in the middle, with humid summers and winters that bounce above and below freezing. Those swings are harder on a tiny container than steady cold is.

Louisville and the Ohio River valley hold humid heat in summer, and the eastern mountains stay cooler at night. Freeze and thaw cycles can crack cheap plastic and ceramic, so choose a container that can take that movement.

When to order

Spring and fall are usually gentlest. Heat waves and ice can each push a box back.

Keeping medaka here

Roughly USDA hardiness zones 6 to 7. A deep tub can often stay out all year with summer shade. A 10-gallon or larger indoor tank also works, no heater needed. More in my winter guide.

Plants for Kentucky

Nothing in my plant shop is on my restricted list for Kentucky today.

Rates, holds, and the live arrival guarantee are on my shipping page. Never release fish or plants into local water, and ask your state wildlife agency about local rules.
