Live Medaka Shipped to Virginia

Written by Chris, the breeder at Firefly Medaka in Raleigh, NC

Yes, I ship live Japanese rice fish to Virginia. Boxes leave Raleigh, North Carolina on Mondays by UPS 2nd Day Air, so a Monday box is normally due Wednesday. I have no shop or pickup in Virginia.

Virginia weather and your fish

Virginia is my neighbor to the north, with cooler mountains in the west and a humid, milder Tidewater in the east. Transit weather is usually the same weather I am watching here.

Northern Virginia and Richmond share hot, humid summers, while Roanoke and the Blue Ridge run cooler. Hampton Roads keepers should keep tubs above storm flooding, and shaded yards should net tubs against fall leaves.

When to order

Spring and fall are usually gentlest. Heat waves and ice can each push a box back.

Keeping medaka here

Roughly USDA hardiness zones 5 to 8. A deep tub can often stay out all year with summer shade. A 10-gallon or larger indoor tank also works, no heater needed. More in my winter guide.

Plants for Virginia

Nothing in my plant shop is on my restricted list for Virginia today.

Rates, holds, and the live arrival guarantee are on my shipping page. Never release fish or plants into local water, and ask your state wildlife agency about local rules.
