Live Medaka Shipped to Connecticut

Written by Chris, the breeder at Firefly Medaka in Raleigh, NC

Yes, I ship live Japanese rice fish to Connecticut. Boxes leave Raleigh, North Carolina on Mondays by UPS 2nd Day Air, so a Monday box is normally due Wednesday. I have no shop or pickup in Connecticut. Firefly fish have already landed in Connecticut.

Connecticut weather and your fish

Connecticut gets real winters and the occasional nor'easter, with the shoreline a bit milder than the northwest hills. Spring and fall tend to be the calmest shipping weather.

Stamford and New Haven get a softer winter than Litchfield County. Road salt runoff is worth a thought if your tub sits near a driveway, because melted brine should never reach your fish.

When to order

Spring and fall are usually gentlest. Heat waves and ice can each push a box back.

Keeping medaka here

Roughly USDA hardiness zones 6 to 7. A deep tub can often stay out all year with summer shade. A 10-gallon or larger indoor tank also works, no heater needed. More in my winter guide.

Plants for Connecticut

I do not ship Dwarf Water Lettuce, Floating Plant Variety Pack, Anacharis, and Submerged Plant Variety Pack to Connecticut. The rest of my plant shop can go, and the free floating plants in a fish or snail order are chosen from what is legal to send you.

Rates, holds, and the live arrival guarantee are on my shipping page. Never release fish or plants into local water, and ask your state wildlife agency about local rules.
