Live Medaka Shipped to Nevada

Written by Chris, the breeder at Firefly Medaka in Raleigh, NC

Yes, I ship live Japanese rice fish to Nevada. Boxes leave Raleigh, North Carolina on Mondays by UPS 2nd Day Air, so a Monday box is normally due Wednesday. I have no shop or pickup in Nevada.

Nevada weather and your fish

Las Vegas summers are brutal for a small outdoor container, while Reno and the north get cold winters. Evaporation in dry air means you top off far more often than in the East.

Boxes bound for Las Vegas in summer are the ones I watch most closely, and you should plan on being home to bring yours inside. Reno's elevation brings colder nights, so its keepers need to think about depth as well as shade.

When to order

Spring and fall are the best windows. Summer heat at your door is my usual reason to hold a box.

Keeping medaka here

Roughly USDA hardiness zones 4 to 10. Large water volume buffers daily swings, and floaters cut the sun. A 10-gallon or larger indoor tank skips the weather altogether. More in my winter guide.

Plants for Nevada

Nothing in my plant shop is on my restricted list for Nevada today.

Rates, holds, and the live arrival guarantee are on my shipping page. Never release fish or plants into local water, and ask your state wildlife agency about local rules.
