Live Medaka Shipped to Utah

Written by Chris, the breeder at Firefly Medaka in Raleigh, NC

Yes, I ship live Japanese rice fish to Utah. Boxes leave Raleigh, North Carolina on Mondays by UPS 2nd Day Air, so a Monday box is normally due Wednesday. I have no shop or pickup in Utah.

Utah weather and your fish

Utah's dry air and strong sun mean fast evaporation in summer, and cold winters along the Wasatch Front and in the mountains. St. George in the south is a much hotter story.

Salt Lake City winters can be cold and smoggy, and the summer air is very dry, so top off more often than you would think. Hard water is common here, which medaka generally tolerate well if you avoid sudden changes.

When to order

Spring and fall are the best windows. Summer heat at your door is my usual reason to hold a box.

Keeping medaka here

Roughly USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9. Large water volume buffers daily swings, and floaters cut the sun. A 10-gallon or larger indoor tank skips the weather altogether. More in my winter guide.

Plants for Utah

Nothing in my plant shop is on my restricted list for Utah today.

Rates, holds, and the live arrival guarantee are on my shipping page. Never release fish or plants into local water, and ask your state wildlife agency about local rules.

It depends on elevation. Shade and water volume matter most.
